Community Safety

The DPS Strategic Plan prioritizes providing "a safe school environment that supports the whole child." Because schools are located in context, they are tied to the communities they serve and have the ability, and responsibility, to positively impact community safety. This section emphasizes tools and resources for prevention of, intervention in, and recovery from community violence.

Restorative practices are the foundation of DPS efforts to ensure safe schools.

The fundamental unifying hypothesis of restorative practices is disarmingly simple: that human beings are happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes in their behavior when those in positions of authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them.
